This series captures Franz Kafka’s life in Prague in 1912, in the months leading up to the writing of The Metamorphosis, introducing us to his family and inner world. His mother is pleased with his weight gain after a stay at a sanatorium; his father insists he attend inspections at the asbestos factory in which he holds shares. Franz quietly submits to these expectations, though his thoughts are consumed by his writing – which he finds himself unable to engage with, feeling he is failing at it. A letter from Max Brod to Kafka’s father eventually frees him from factory duties, and a visit from his cousin Felice, arriving from Berlin, offers only a brief distraction.
