Tereza Chvojková

Tereza Chvojková (*1992) was born in Havířov and studied journalism in Ostrava. After finishing school, she moved away for work, first to Prague and then to Ireland, which she had fallen hopelessly in love with during her studies. In addition to writing travelogues, she tirelessly collects unusual stories that people share with her on her travels. Her debut novel, The Last Sentence, tells an intricate tale moulded out of the strangest stories and experiences shared with her, set in the picturesque, if sometimes quite harsh, backdrop of her beloved Ireland.

The Last Sentence

May 2024, 224 pages

After the passing of her beloved grandmother Apolena, young Ela receives a bundle of old letters that contain professions of love from her grandmother and the mysterious William. The letters are full of Celtic and Irish myths and legends, but most importantly, they reveal her grandmother’s long-hidden secret—a second life in the north of Ireland. Determined to uncover Apolena’s past, Ela sets out to find not only the author of the letters but also something she has never known: a loving home. Grumpy old William, his nutty sister Triona, her ever-flirtatious husband Benjamin, and their ten-year-old son Enda constantly embarrass Ella, and secrets seem to be the order of the day for the family. Despite her many doubts, Ela sets off with them on a journey across Ireland, following the trail of Apolena’s and William’s letters. The trip, intended initially as a kind of tribute to the beloved Apolena, is a unique opportunity for Ela to get to the bottom of the family mystery.
